upgrade from 7.10, can't boot at all :s

I upgraded from 7.10, and everything with the install went fine... except when it tried to restart. I got to the point where it shows the kubuntu loading screen, and when it was finished, it flashed starting k display manager kdm or something, and then it just kept flashing and like refreshing... eventually, after about 5 mins, it told me that firmware bcmxxx is not valid, visit linuxdrivers.org or something to upgrade. I tried booting into the old kernel, I tried trying startx, sudo, etc... its completely non-responsive. any idea whats going on? I would really like to be able to use my computer again...
