    [Solved] Drive not detected

I'm trying to do a fresh install of Kubuntu 8.04, but one of my hard drives isn't being detected.

I have two hard drives and a DVD.

The first 'hda' is an 80GB PATA with four partitions
    hda2 - /
    hda5 - swap
    hda6 - /home

The second is an 500GB SATA with one partition - detected by the installer.

    A screen shot from GParted

None of the hda partitions are detected by the installer. I have tried both versions of the installer CD.

I have triedd adding acpi=off and pci=nomsi but no luck.

    What am I doing wrong??

How do you have the IDE drive set in BIOS? If it has "legacy" mode or some other mode, try the other mode.

      I have an Asrock 775Dual-vsta http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.as...75Dual-vsta&s=.

The IDE options I have are:

      NameOptions
      TypeNon/Auto/CD/Armd
      LBA/Large modeDisabled/Auto
      BlockDisabed/Auto
      PIO ModeAuto/0/1/2/3/4
      DMA ModeAuto/a long list
      SMARTAuto/Disabled/Enabled
      32 bit data transfer Disabled/Enabled

All the options are set to Auto or enabled.

I'm going to try experimenting with them and see what happens.

        Re: Drive not detected

I spent a large amount of time trying various settings in the BIOS, even trying to set the SATA drive as RAID.

        None of my experiments worked.

I did notice that there is a much newer version of the BIOS available, so I will update it at a later date.

I have now reinstall 7.10, which has confirmed my suspicion that GRUB is very slow to start and Kate really does open files behind the current window.

          I managed to fix this

I recently replaced my graphics card - an ATI 5670 replaced an ATI 9550. As I had the side off the case I removed as much of the dust that I could. Whilst tidying the cables I noticed that the pins on the back of the PATA drive looked bent, upon further investigation I found a bit of copper resting in the pins and shorting out several of them.

Now, the Hardy installer recognises the HD and the PC's start up times have been reduced by 90 seconds.

The bit that I removed looks like the metal section of a jumper.
