    Upgrade from 7.10 went poorly...

Well, I tried to upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 today, and things just didn't go well. I had to modify my grub menu manually (please tell me if I missed anything):

    Code:
    # menu.lst - See: grub(8), info grub, update-grub(8)
    # grub-install(8), grub-floppy(8),
    # grub-md5-crypt, /usr/share/doc/grub
    # and /usr/share/doc/grub-doc/.

    ## default num
    # Set the default entry to the entry number NUM. Numbering starts from 0, and
    # the entry number 0 is the default if the command is not used.
    #
    # You can specify 'saved' instead of a number. In this case, the default entry
    # is the entry saved with the command 'savedefault'.
    # WARNING: If you are using dmraid do not change this entry to 'saved' or your
    # array will desync and will not let you boot your system.

And I don't know how to fix it, start KDE, find out what's wrong, or anything. I do know the above uuid is my swap file partition, and that my linux partition is 2df69a94-6b9e-42c7-8b7f-674c7d7a0bbd. Can someone please help out?

Re: Upgrade from 7.10 went poorly...

Sorry that your update went poorly, I know it doesn't help any more.
I assume you have a backup for the data and home partition?

The rules I go by are:
    0. Use a fresh install
    1. If you are in a hurry, do not update, use a fresh install.
    2. If you still need to update, then at least wait for the first errors to be solved and track the forums.

    For your current problem.
I am assuming you have separate home and data partitions, i.e. not equal to root.

What I would do is do a fresh install over the old root and boot. You will lose your installed programs, but (as long as home and data are in separate partitions) all will not be lost.

If that is not an option, I hope someone comes along who can interpret the grub stuff.

    Whatever you choose, take care.

Re: Upgrade from 7.10 went poorly...

      Hi,

Are you saying that you do not even get a login prompt etc?

I would start by changing the line :
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-16-generic root=/dev/hda3 ro quiet splash

      to :
      kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-16-generic root=/dev/hda3 ro quiet

So that you can see what is happening when it is booting up. If you then end up at a terminal you can try the command 'startx' to start kde......

Let me know how you go

I get a text-based login... which I can log in to and all... but I can't get KDE to load.

Once you have logged in try running the command : startx

          What does it do then?

Well that explains why it doesn't work so good

What you might like to try is reconfiguring your xorg.conf. This is in /etc/X11/ and it defines your screens etc at the bottom of the config script.

Once you have logged in try this command :
              sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

That should walk you through the config wizard thingy.

You might want to make a backup of the xorg.conf file before you start though.....

Re: Upgrade from 7.10 went poorly...

Well, startx starts KDE up, but now I get two KDE Panel errors:
                Malformed URL: system:/ and trash:/
My System menu is empty, my trash won't open, my desktop is blank, and on restart, it still gets the errors from the first post and doesn't boot to KDE.

                  Wow, thats kinda lame.....

I wonder if re-installing kdelibs would fix any of that? It might just reset it back to what it was though.....you can try it if you want too....

                  sudo apt-get install kdelibs

You may need to force it?

We really need someone that knows something to help you from here methinks

I did a silly thing and installed the drivers for my video card. Now when I do startx, my screen says No Signal Input and goes black. I think I'll just reinstall...

                      hahahahaha yeah sounds screwed......

You should be able to run the reconf wizard for your xorg.conf and it might be right again.....but as long as you have all of your data backed up etc then yeah - reinstall quicker and easier

I installed the kde4 remix this morning and I am already over it.....Im gonna reinstall the 'normal' version just as soon as it finishes dldn....

Can you boot into recovery mode?
if so try startx from there and see what happens.

If you can't get into the gui for root the type:
                        Code:
                        dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
at the prompt, choose manual for card search and choose vesa (this should work for any card) choose the defaults for the rest unless you know what you are doing.

Someone had a similar problem maybe it will help:

I think he was able to solve hhis problem.

Er... I'm using MS VPC 2007 now... and partway through the upgrade, my entire comp froze (happens a lot, don't ask). So, I was gonna do sudo apt-get dist-upgrade... but... does that correctly continue an upgrade that was started via the Adept GUI?
