Because the official server is dog-slow at the moment, I thought I'd be a responsible netizen and download the alternate install CD-ROM from one of the mirrors. I then followed the first option in the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades/Kubuntu. The installer first asks if I want to install updates from the net. Saying "yes" seems to kick it into download-everything mode (i.e., slowww), so I aborted and attempted to do the upgrade using only the CD-ROM files. Everything looks fast, but then it reports that it can't authenticate a huge long list of packages and aborts before I'm even prompted to begin the real installation phase.
Am I doing something dumb here or is this a real issue? This is the amd64 alternate CD, and I'm starting from a Gutsy install that's been pretty regularly updated.
