    The 24th is fast approaching..

    Is HH ready to rock the world?
    I'm planning to install HH this weekend as a dual boot with winxp. I've installed another hard drive that will be used for linux (formatted as NTFS). I've already cleaned up the winxp hard drive and partitioned it off so that I have another space for storage too.
    So besides the first question I asked, I have a couple of more
    When Kubuntu installs, will it reformat the new hard drive into ext3? I also want to take the advice from you all to install the /home directory on another partition. Does the Kubuntu install have an option for this? Or do I have prepare the new hard drive or partition the new hard drive for linux before the install? ( I ask this as I see alot of posts dealing with moving the /home after installing, not during an install)
    The last question, (and I read it somewhere but I forgot where), when I install kubuntu, do I turn on my 2 printers, scanner, webcam etc etc before I start the install.
    Any other quick tricks and tips to make the install go nicely would also be very useful.

    Before running the Kubuntu installer CD, do your partitioning using GParted Live CD.
    Set up partitions for root, swap, and /home beforehand (not afterwards).

      I'm done with "dual" booting.

      I now have windows located on it's own HDD and Linux on it's own. When I want to boot windows I simply hit F11 (my Mobo's default) during boot and it comes up with my boot menu. I select the HDD that has windows on it and it comes up like it's the only thing on the machine. I can now play with linux to my heart's content without fear of messing up the delecate ballance between destruction and uselessness that is my Windows install.

        Thanks for the links Qqmike, I saw some of them before, but now I understand it a little more.
        Now I may be reading it wrong, but in the Partition How to link (by Rog131) and clicking on the "this guide" for home partiiton before install, the guide partitions a drive into a data partition of 20G,with a mount point of /media/xxx, then a ubuntu partition of 59G on a mount point /, he then creates a SWAP partition as a logical drive and the install wants to mount it as /home, where the guide writer says he want it as a swap instead of doing a home partition.
        So if I want to have a separate home partition I should ( if I change the guides order a bit )
        Make a 30G partition for kubuntu as primary first with mount point / ( so then I don't have to set the partition to the begining if I do it after)
        then make a 29G partition as a logical and mount point /home
        then a 1G partition as logical again for SWAP
        then a 20G partition as primary on mount point /media/xxx for data.
        Would this be right?
        But if I use your advice of using the gparted cd and partition everything properly, then install Kubuntu, will the install know where to put everything?

          Here is how i partitioned 250 G HD with the Gparted:



          It is part of Topic: KDE4: Clean installation with live CD

          =>

          / 10 G (root or / partition)
          /home 10 G (i keep stuf in the data partitions)
          swap 2 G
          Rest is data partitions (2x)


          will the install know where to put everything?
          You use manual option. You tell that you have partitions - and you want mount partition as /, /home, swap or something else:

            Thanks for the extra info Rog131,
            I'm surprised at how little drive space is required for Kubuntu and the home directory.
            Are all linux programs that small?
