I'm surprised to hear about the -16 sound problems. I usually get bit by all sound issues, on at least one of my boxes, but -16 has still been working for me fine.
I *do* recall that I had to go back into Amarok and undo some OSS hack... to go back to Alsa to make that one program work. Some problem with one of the earlier kernels made me temporarily go OSS with it. It's a longshot, but f you had the same issue, maybe you need to do the same.
Specs: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (@3Ghz), G.SKILL 4GB DDR2 1066, ASUS Striker II Formula MB, Asus EN9800GTX+ Dark Knight, ABS Tagan BZ800 PS, Antec 900 Case.
I just updated to Hardy and lost sound as well. Nvidia sound card. Everything looked set up correctly but I was getting no output. Following the sound troubleshooting guide uninstalling and reinstalling the ALSA packages seems to have resolved the issue. (I did have to reinstall kubuntu-desktop as well - weird bug but at least they warned me)
