    7.10>8.04 upgrade +- success [RESOLVED]

    I followed
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades/Kubuntu
and all went +-as it suggests

    two anomalies:
it warned me of two config changes: one to cups, one to smb.conf- both of which I refused

my printer seems to be intact thus far

    However:
in a console I get this:

    tom@fawn:~$ sudo apt-get update
sudo: unable to resolve host fawn

FOUND THAT /ETC/HOSTS HAD BEEN MODIFIED, 'FAWN' REMOVED FROM LOCALHOST
REBOOTED IN RECOVERY MODE TO GET ROOT ACCESS, DID THE EDIT, NOW IT WORKS.

    tom@fawn:~$ locate smb.conf
locate: can not open `/var/lib/mlocate/mlocate.db': No such file or directory

    what am I missing here?

    Second anomaly:
the Reboot Required box came up before the Cleanup was finished, and then it rebooted entirely on its own (ie I touched nothing)

Is there something I should do now to force the cleanup to complete itself?

        Question.

What if when you attempt sudo updatedb you get

sudo: unable to resolve host raunes

        or doing sudo dpkg -configure

        anything involving sudo yields

sudo: unable to resolve host raunes

The first thing to check is that your hostname is correctly set up in /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname files, /etc/hosts should contain a line similar to:
          127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost HOSTNAME
Where 'HOSTNAME' is the same as in /etc/hostname.

If you're unsure, you can post the contents of aforementioned files here and someone can check them for you. Post again if that doesn't solve the problem.

NOTE: If you can't use sudo, you need to boot into recovery mode to get root access to edit those files (unless you have enabled the root account for some reason)

Thanks, got it fixed in /etc/hosts , then sudo updatedb, etc.

Took me a bit to remember my root password.

I had this problem on upgrade to hardy, too. I found this solution:

FOUND THAT /ETC/HOSTS HAD BEEN MODIFIED, 'FAWN' REMOVED FROM LOCALHOST
REBOOTED IN RECOVERY MODE TO GET ROOT ACCESS, DID THE EDIT, NOW IT WORKS.
but was given "permission denied" on /etc/hosts. Testing further, su gives me authorisation failure on entering my password at the Password: prompt. Before upgrading, I only had the one password, which is still working fine to log in. So it seems the root password has changed, but I certainly did not change it. Any ideas?

Fixed now, but I had to use a live CD, which is a bit disturbing.
