I have always done my upgrades from the command like this.
Edit my sources.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
I run these commands two or three times or until there are no further changes. Then I reboot.
I have bee looking at several of the blogs and most point to this link or one very much like it. Is this a better way? The apt-get has served me well since dapper and debian before that. What is the reason this method is be promoted? Is Hardy different from past versions? Am I out of touch?
