Can't install ATI proprietary driver. <SOLVED> PROCEED WITH CAUTION

Well, I went for it and so far I'm loving Hardy. Using KDE 3.x though since the KDE 4 desktop is a bit too much of a poor Vista copy in my mind (really don't like the menus in 4).

One small detail: I cannot activate my ATI driver through the Hardware Drivers Manager. It's listed, but checking the activation check box doesn't do a thing.

So I tried a manual install, but that one fails due to an invalid xorg.conf file (it seems to lack a 'driver' section).

So how do I get my xorg-driver-fglrx installed and working? Any ideas?

Oh, and with the updates after a clean install my cool background vanished. Anyone know how to get it back?

Install appropriate driver through envy :-

Envy is really good.
If u r using hardy:- download envy debpackage
(single click on it) , install it.In the menu u will get an ENVY entry.In envy click install ati driver : )

Well, I did give envy a try after I posted this, deb package like strikar is also suggesting, but no joy.

I'm going to have to do a reinstall of Kubuntu since it doesn't start up the login screen anymore. I get a nice white screen that flickers a couple of times, then a black screen and my comp doesn't respond to anything anymore.

After I set up Kubuntu again, I'll just have to file a bug report and wait for the devs to fix it I guess. Usually the ATI instructions have similar results. Shame though, since in Ubuntu Hardy the driver works perfectly and even enables direct rendering by default. I'm hoping Kubuntu uses the same driver so I can use my vid card to the max.

If anything new comes up, I'll update this thread. Thanks all for your replies.

A small note of warning:
Even though following this method my direct rendering is enabled, for some reason shutting down Kubuntu doesn't work anymore. At this point I'm not sure that this is a bug in Kubuntu or in the ATI divers (my guess would be the latter). So you have been warned!

Ok since Envy just messed up my Kubuntu installation I went ahead and did this on a fresh install:

1) Install xorg-driver-fglrx through the package manager
2) In a terminal type

sudo depmod -a

3) Edit xorg.conf

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

And add

Driver "fglrx"

in the Device section.
Note: if it is in there already, of course there's no need to add it a second time.
4) In terminal do

sudo aticonfig --initial -f

5) Reboot and check if it's there in the hardware driver manager.

Now I got my driver working properly and direct rendering on my ATI card. Hope this helps others as well.
