    Monitor turns off on boot

When I boot from the cd the monitor turns off. I can click run kubuntu live... but then the monitor turns off. Then comes back on when it is on desktop. Because of that I cant install it. I have GeForce 8600GT

Yes, the 8000-series Nvidia cards are tricky to get started -- here are a couple of links that may help you get past that annoying little feature:

Can you burn an Alternate Install CD to use, instead of the Live CD? I think it will not have the same problem.

            Edit your grub menu.lst.

            Code:
            kdesu kate /boot/grub/menu.lst
Remove the words "quiet" and "splash" from the first kernal entry.

            Save the file.

            Reboot.

If I'm reading the OP post correctly, the bootable CD itself isn't presenting the GUI -- so it won't be possible to change the kernel boot entry that way, until he can get the system installed on his hard drive.

Is there a "Safe Graphics Mode", or an opportunity to press F6 on that initial menu for the Alternate CD? I used the Alternate CD to install my Hardy Heron Alpha 5, and somehow I got past the issue with the 8000-series Nvidia card not wanting to present the display, but I don't remember exactly what I did 3 or 4 weeks ago. :P

Well, I thought he had installed Kubuntu using the alternate CD. But did not see all the boot up info when booting. Did I misunderstand his most recent post?

Ahh -- no, I think maybe I didn't realize that he'd got it installed on the hard drive. My bad

                    I used
                    Code:
                    sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst
                    Thanks. That worked.

KDE4 does not use kdesu as KDE3 did. It has been replaced by 'kdesudo'. Remember that when running KDE4.
