Re: Hardy stops during boot after KDM

put the other modules in, but no change. KDE3 apps still don't work, and I can't get into the KDE3 desktop.

It's strange that the LiveCD of HH works but the install doesn't boot. What is different?

Re: Hardy stops during boot after KDM

I'll bet the Live CD uses the "nv" driver. Which is fine, if you don't care about the "eye candy" -- it would be interesting to try it that way.

Unfortunately, after installation of the nvidia-glx-new driver, I'm not sure exactly how you would convert back to "nv" to check my theory. It's easy enough to mark the packages in Adept for removal and installation, but xorg.conf would need to be re-written I think, and yours already has the changes made by nvidia-xconfig. :P

      Scratching my head now .....

Do you still have a backup of the original xorg.conf that Kubuntu put in, before you installed the nvidia-glx-new package?

I didn't have the glx-new package in when I upgraded. And HH does the exact same thing when I install it from the CD. It never gets past that point. The only way I can get into HH is to install Gutsy, put KDE4 on, and then upgrade.

I love how the printer was automatically setup and it is even named the right model number though! hehe

Thank you for your continued help!! Believe me it's NICE!!

            Ugh!

Think my wife would believe that my monitor doesn't work with the operating system she sees me running every day? And that I need a 22" widescreen just to get by?

I've gotta check this log too.

Re: Hardy stops during boot after KDM

Kev, I don't think the Nvidia driver is getting installed correctly, somehow. It seems to be trying to run, and puking in the process. I have seen that same message before, but I can't recall the exact situation that caused it. Maybe a kernel upgrade?

You might want to try this little process and see if you get a different result (better, hopefully):

Re: Hardy stops during boot after KDM

So I formated and reinstalled Hardy. I logged into "failsafe" and did a sudo apt-get upgrade then I installed nvidia-glx-new and then I did sudo nvidia-xconfig --add argb-glx-visuals --composite

It won't boot into KDE3 still.

I checked out the Xorg.0.log file and it looked like it wasn't recognizing my 8600GT (maybe I have to go buy a 8800GT?)

But it did recognize my Benq FP937s monitor.

So I just logged in to command line and now I'm going to install KDE4 again just to see what happens...

                  sudo apt-get install kde4

OK that didn't work out so well.... as much as I like the printer working so nicely and all.. HH is just gonna have to wait.

Well I haven't gotten mine fixed. I'll try installing kde4 and see how that goes. If not I'll wait till alpha 5 comes out on the 25th.

Let me know if you find a solution...I'm having the same problem booting to a KDE4 session on HH. KDE3 works fine, but KDE4 goes to a black screen immediately after the desktop loads. What's strange, is that the mouse cursor is still present, and I can open applications, just not see them. I can press F12 and Yakuake seems to open because the cursor changes shape over the location Yakuake's window should be; the same goes for Firefox and the addressbar :P

OK, I'm back-up-and-running. Yesterday, the last time I had a GUI in KDE4, was just before I removed several KDE3 apps. I restored KDE4 by reinstalling the 'kubuntu-desktop' package, which restored the software I uninstalled. I'm not exactly sure which app did the trick, so I'm posting the part of aptitude's log describing the changes:

If I do the upgrades to KDE3 in the KDE4 repos for Kubuntu it stops working for me just like it wasn't working in HH. (I'm back in Gutsy now). But I can fully update the system with the Gutsy repos.

Here are a couple of thoughts for you guys --

                                1. Assuming your Nvidia cards are PCI bus cards, add the "pci=nomce" option to your kernel boot line in the /boot/grub/menu.lst file, and reboot -- it seems to help on some motherboards.

                                2. For purposes of getting to any kind of a GUI desktop, you might try configuring an xorg.conf file with the "nv" driver. To do that, at the CLI (I guess that's all you have anyway ....)

                                Code:
                                sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
choose "no" to autodetect, and on the next screen choose "nv" and then you know what to do with the rest of it. I only put an "x" in a single screen resolution, to keep it simple.

Then when you're back to the CLI, you might be able to start the X server with
                                Code:
                                sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start
                                I'll cross my fingers ......
