    Broken KDM?

I found this in my synaptic as not installed (residual?? or something): libungif4g

so I thought hey lets do it.

It told me it was going to modify some kde4 and kde3 packages. what it did was uninstall my whole kubuntu-desktop and all fo kde4 including kdm, etc.

So I reinstalled kubuntu-desktop, kde4-core, kdm and a few other things I needed.

Now at reboot kdm does not come up. I have to login from the CLI and use startx to get t my desktop.

    Any ideas?

    I gotta admire that spirit!

Well, it sounds like it was a pretty rough ride for your system -- it's good that you can even get back to a desktop at all!

I think maybe I would rename the hidden files .kde and .kde4 (located in your /home/Fred folder -- use Konqueror and choose "View > Show hidden files") to something else, then shutdown and restart the system in "recovery mode", which automatically puts you at the root user prompt "#". At that prompt, enter
    Code:
    /etc/init.d/kdm start
and see if you are presented with your GUI user login. If so, log in to either KDE or KDE 4 and see if the desktop looks right for a brand new KDE session. Log out of whichever session your first logged into, and then log into the other one. After verifying that it looks about right, log out of that one with a "Restart System", and let's see what happens when you choose your normal boot menu option to start it up as a user. I'll cross my fingers ....

      Thankx dible.
Yeah, it was not easy but it seams back to almost normal now.
Actually what I did was similar:
I booted into recovery mode and opened up synaptic, searched for kdm and reinstalled it.

I then went into system settings->advanced->system services to see if kdm was running. It wasn't so i restarted it there and made it run at boot.

It works again but I am getting the old blue swish background and the old grey user manager.

I know I can change the background but how do I get rid of the grey user manager??

Does anyone know if the kdm-kde4 works yet?
I think I have had enough of experimenting for a few days

        Re: Broken KDM? Please help.

Well I guess i was just a bit overzealious.

I tested my solution just by logging out and logging back in. Today I turned my machine off for a needed rest and rebooted a few hors later. No kdm.

running /etc/init.d/kdm start gives me something like this: Not starting K Display Manager (kdm); it is not the default display manager.

I don't have any other Display Manager.
How can I force HH to recognize kdm as default

          Maybe this will help:
          http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...091025.new#new

Ignore the stuff about uuid but the /etc/x11/default-desktop-manger section should help.

For some reason installing kdm-kde4 borks that file.

          I hope that helps
