CD/DVD Drive either not mounting or just not seen on Acer 4810t

    Hi

Seems to be a similar issue to this old post:

    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3102443.0

If I boot up and put in a disk then it spins up and down with nothing happening.

If I try to mount it through Kcontrol I get

mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
    dmesg | tail or so

If I put the disk in before I boot, the disk pops up on the Desktop and in Storage Media, but I'm unable to mount it - "Permission Denied" whether I'm root or not.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Re: CD/DVD Drive either not mounting or just not seen on Acer 4810t

Once in awhile this problem appears, for someone -- unfortunately it does not always seem to have a solution.

First, there should never be a requirement to manually mount an optical drive on a modern Linux OS. If it won't "just work", then there's an issue with the hardware itself or the hardware driver, most likely, and manual mounting won't help.

Troubleshooting -- first step -- BIOS check. What is the interface to your optical drive, and what channel do you have it on? Are there "options" on the interface (IDE or SATA, as applicable), like "legacy mode" or "AHCI"? A little fiddling with these settings might make it visible to the OS. Also, if you can boot a Live CD and run it, that will give you the warm fuzzy feeling that an internal cable connector hasn't come loose or something silly like that.

Second, in the Konsole run dmesg and look at the boot sequence events. On my rig, if I scroll through the dmesg output, I find a section where the messages begin "ATA" and there I find this:

    [ 0.501757] ata5.01: ATAPI: ASUS DRW-1608P3S, 1.24, max UDMA/66
    [ 0.517779] ata5.01: configured for UDMA/66
    [ 0.658392] ata4: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)
then I see my my 3 SATA hard drives were found and then immediately following that section I find this:
[ 1.430766] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI disk
    [ 1.432092] scsi 4:0:1:0: CD-ROM ASUS DRW-1608P3S 1.24 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
    [ 1.433781] sdc1 sdc2 sdc3
[ 1.438567] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCSI disk
    [ 1.450397] sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 40x/40x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
    [ 1.450401] Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
    [ 1.450579] sr 4:0:1:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
    [ 1.450676] sr 4:0:1:0: Attached scsi generic sg3 type 5
Showing that the OS found the optical drive during the boot process. It has to be "seen" before it can ever be mounted.

Finally, *buntu automatically writes the /etc/fstab file during installation, and (if installed from a CD ROM) the mounting instruction is found at the end of the file, looking very much like this:

    /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

Re: CD/DVD Drive either not mounting or just not seen on Acer 4810t

What was annoying me was that I had installed the distro using the drive in the first place.

I've now discovered that the drive is recognised if I put a disk in at start up (obviously doesn't help if it's bootable, and I don't want it to boot from that!). I can then mount it. But if I take the disk out, it won't recognise any further use of the drive.

Anyway, I'll have a look at your suggestions and get back to you.

Another thing to point out is that in Vista, the drive has some sort of energy saving mode, maybe this is helping cause the issue.

        Ok.

This is what dmesg gives me, whether I have anything in the drive to begin with or not:

That means very little to me!

        According to the article

If any of the drivers you thought you compiled in are not displayed, then something went wrong with the kernel configuration or build. Start the installation process again, beginning with configuration and building of the kernel.
My build seems otherwise OK, do I really need to reinstall (plus the fact I wouldn't know how to go about it - beyond starting all over again)?

I had a look in Adept and searched 'iso9660', neither libarchive1 or libiso9660-5 are installed

Should I install one of these libs and that would add the iso9660 driver?

I checked my installed packages and find the libiso9660-7 (I'm running a newer kernel). I think you need to install that one (the -5 shown on your list).

Another thought -- make sure your user is a member of the "audio" group and also the "fuse" group, and then you'll have to log out and back in to see if makes a difference.

Checked. I assume that root doesn't have to be a member?

Having done the above and rebooted, the difference is minimal. To get the machine to recognise the disk I had to boot with it in the drive (as before), though this time I managed to remove it and replace it, and it recognised it again (small victory).

But if I took it out and replaced it with another disk, or put the 1st one back in after trying it with another disk, no joy.

Another thing I've noticed since I first posted it the if I put a disk in and take it out (not recogised) the HDD light remains on, ie. the disk stays in perpetual spin. Not good.

At least iso9660 is now showing up here:

            Code:
            ~$ cat /proc/filesystems
