Which SATA controller will work ?

    Hi everyone,

I have an old Dell Dimension 2350 that I put 8.04 on. Though everything works fine I'm limited by its 40GB drive so I bought a WD Caviar Blue drive, only to find that the box has only an IDE connector.

So, I'm thinking of buying a SATA controller and a power adapter to connect the WD as a second drive.

The question is would this work on this box with its old BIOS and if so which controller would work with Kubuntu.

Would appreciate any advice from people who've actually done this.

    thanks,
    Newbie

SATA II controllers will work fine with SATA I drives. Though the reverse isn't always true (some SATA I controllers need the SATA II drive that is plugged into it to have a jumper changed to limit the speed to the SATA I standard).

I haven't quite done it -- I did put a larger IDE drive into a Dimension 2350, and installed 8.10 on it, and it does run fine. But your concern is justified -- I would research carefully before spending any more money on the project. The higher-confidence route would be to buy an IDE drive and find a customer for the WD.
