I have running Kubuntu 8.04 32 bits and everything works grat out of the box. I can play any audio / video, but if i try to record with Audacity, speak in Skype i cant. i tried updating ALSA, all the options in Kmix, the setting in Audacity, without any success. if i plug a microphone and turn it on in Kmix, as i rise it's volume i hear a white hiss, but i have no results. My motherboard is an ECS 945GCT-M V 1.0 and uses a Realtek ALC883 sound chip. What else can i try?
