Yay! This morning resolution is back to 800 by 600. Something's working!

Re: Toshiba Satellite 1800 video driver

Thank-you, Snowhog! I finally got my head around the fact that the command you supplied me was the reason I could restore my resolution to 800 by 600.

Now, is 1024 by 768 possible on my machine?

I love Kubuntu and dearly want it in full splendour on my laptop, but if 800 by 600 is top possible resolution, so be it.

Re: Toshiba Satellite 1800 video driver

You'll need to further identify the specific model of 1800 you have. But, assuming it is a 14.1 inch display, then according to the specifications for the 1800-S253:
            Display

Display Type 14.1 in TFT active matrix Integrated
            Max Resolution 1024 x 768 ( XGA )
            Widescreen Display No
Color Support 24-bit (16.7 million colors)

            Video

Graphics Processor / Vendor AGP 2x
Video Memory Shared video memory (UMA)
            Supported Display Graphics SXGA (1280x1024) , XGA (1024x768) , VGA (640x480) , SVGA (800x600)
            Rerun sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
See if XGA is an option. If it is, select it. Then choose the maximum resolution of 1024x768.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Re: Toshiba Satellite 1800 video driver

Taking a look at your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file might also help. Just looking around the internets seems to support the possibility that this video card can support 1024x768. In fact I found an older posting on ubuntu that showed a fairly extensive xorg.conf file for this same video processor. It doesn't always mean that the machine manufacturer has implemented everything for your specific computer, but it's worth a try.

You might want to compare this:
              Code:
              # /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
              #
              # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
              # values from the debconf database.
              #
              # Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
              # (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
              #
              # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
              # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
              # package.
              #
              # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
              # again, run the following command:
              # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Re: Toshiba Satellite 1800 video driver (SOLVED)

                      Problem solved.

Thanks for your interest and help, Snowhog and jglen490! I hope others with this problem will benefit from this thread. If you benefit, why not leave a post to let me know?

The Ubuntu forums led me to the answer. Great forums with lots of participation.

The problem is with the xorg.conf file as jglen490 figured. In Kubuntu 8.04 this file won't allow full screen resolution for Toshiba Satellite 1800 laptops with the Trident Microsystems CyberBlade XPAi1 display controller. The xorg.conf file with Kubuntu 8.04 is faulty and has to be replaced by an xorg.conf file that is good. Fortunately the xorg.conf file in Ubuntu 7.10 works perfectly, so I downloaded that ISO file from the Ubuntu archives and ran it as a live CD. I then copied the xorg.conf file onto my flash drive (a floppy would work) so I could then copy it to my installed Kubuntu 8.04 operating system. I opened the faulty file with a root editor, deleted the contents and replaced them with the good contents from the Ubuntu 7.10 version of the file.

Upon reboot, I had full screen 1024 by 768. Yay!

The location of the file in question is root/etc/x11/xorg.conf.

I tried to attach a copy of the good xorg.conf file but this filetype is not uploadable on this forum, so if you want a copy you will have to get it from the Ubuntu archives like I did.

Linux is the best and Kubuntu is the best linux! Cheers!

Here is a text copy of the good xorg.conf file. Maybe this can just be cut and pasted. I don't know.
