Resolution and refresh SOLVED

One of my computers, a Toshiba Sat A10, can run my Nokia Multigraph 446XPro CRT monitor at 1600x1200@85 HZ.

That is, in Windows XP pro.

Kubuntu - the best compromise is 1280x1024@75HZ. I can run 1600x1200, but at 65 HZ the monitor is no good.

I've checked the xorg.conf file - the mode(s) I want is there (and many others), and it is in all the places where these modes are specified as far as I can see.

The chip is Intel 85x.

Any idea what to do? Or if it is even possible?

What kind of video adapter do you have, and have you installed the proprietary driver? Also, if you can upload the Monitor and Screen sections of your xorg.conf file, some expert may be able to help. {slightly later} Please define "the monitor is no good".

The driver is i810

The monitor is "no good" at frequencies lower than 75 - preferably 85 as in Windows. "No good" means the refresh rate @65 is so slow that the picture is - and here I lack the word - unsteady? It does not stand still in a way - it is a CRT.

I absolutely endorse Snowhog's recommendation that you install 915resolution. Also, you might trim your list of modelines and modes down to the ones that you actually want to use. But I'm surprised that your monitor is usteady at 65Hz. I switched to flat panels a while ago to recover real estate on my physical desk, but I think I was running my CRT at line frequency, i.e. 60Hz. A perusal of the literature indicates:

The Nokia 446Xpro’s horizontal (line) frequency of 107 kHz is unequalled in the 19-inch display category. As a result, the image of the new display is flicker free right up to the record high maximum resolution of 1600 x 1280. The refresh rate is 80 Hz at the maximum resolution. The graphic designer working with exact alignments and fine graphic details will appreciate the accuracy of edges achieved through the small dot pitch of 0.26 mm.

seems to suggest 80 Hz, but I couldn't find a mode line. There are lots of refs on Google, though.

Flicker is the word. Humans react very differently to that - I get sore eyes with refresh rates under 75.

915resolution is a tool to modify the video BIOS of the 800 and 900 series Intel graphics chipsets. This includes the 830, 845G, 855G, and 865G chipsets, as well as 915G, 915GM, 945G, 946GZ, G965, and Q965 chipsets.

Now, taking the statement in the README that nilsA's adapter is supported, then 915resolution should work. Back when I had my Sony VAIO, I had to use this to get 1440x900 video support, so I know that it works.

nilsA - make sure you follow the instructions exactly. The 915resolution package version 0.5.3 can be downloaded here.

It is stap 7. where I get stuck. Where is the equavilent of

/etc/init.d/boot.local

in Kubuntu?
