    New nvidia driver

Has anyone installed this yet ? I was wondering whether it resolves the common screen resolution problem. nvidia claims it resolves a firefox resolution problem but no mention of screen resolution.

I don't see anything in the release notes concerning resolution. What "common problem" are you referring to?

      Re: New nvidia driver

After installing the driver my screen resolution changes to 640x480 with no way to alter it. You then have to faff around in the guts of Kubuntu adding screen resolution sizes or some people refer to changing some vertical and horizontal settings. I understood it was a very common problem and I have tried downloading from adept, with envy and from nvidia with the same problem on every occasion.

Here's an example of someone else with the problem:-

If you follow this method exactly, I would expect the "Step 2" at the bottom to give you the option to adjust screen resolution.

          Re: New nvidia driver

I have tried this again but run into a number of problems. 1. My ctrl-alt functions don't seem to work. 2. After I give the startx command Kubuntu hangs on the Starting K Display Manager screen and I have to reboot. 3. When I go into the nvidia settings option there is only 640 or 320 resolution on the dropdown. I also don't see any save to X Configuration File option but actually can't see the whole screen anyway because of the low resolution. I also noticed my hardware drivers are showing that the nvidia driver is not installed.

Shouldn't the driver installation be doing all this work for me ? I don't quite understand why it picks up this low resolution in the first place.

Which model is your Nvidia card?

This thread is under 8.04, but if you've added the KDE4 environment, there's a known issue with the KDM-KDE4 and the 71 and 96 series of drivers:

It's a 7600 GS and I'm not running KDE 4. I now can't get into Kubuntu at all as when I reboot it just hangs at the Starting K Display Manager screen.
