    HDA INTEL

I used kubuntu 8.04 for 2 months already. Everything worked perfect on my Sony vaio vgn-sz750n. Today, I have no sound. KMix didn't start at startup, and it also doesn't start manually. When I open the sound settings, hda intel card appears to be turned off. Can anybody tell me what happened and how can I get the sound back?

    Hi holodila,

so nice to have a normal question and no troll! Like a breath of fresh air

Anyway, here you go. You will need to go down to Manually Specify Module Parameters - instructions should be easy enough to follow, ask if you get stuck

      HDA INTEL

Heh, this was already done before to make it work from the beginning . Now the problem is that KMix doesn't start! When I launch it it loads for a while, then quits (the mixer window isn't shown). I'll try to reboot and disable/enable my card in bios))

Grrr! I hate sony! the bios had nothing to do with hardware, just the boot priorites and stuff like that. Can anybody tell me how to turn on th hardware card? It seems that I don't have such a button on my laptop. BTW will the external audio card solve the problem?

          Re: HDA INTEL

Never had a Sony, haven't got one at the mo and will never get one I'd rather fork out a little more for a three year old IBM...

Anyway, just a suggestion, but you should be able to ask Sony that question or be able to download their manual. After all, they were the ones who cooked up this little beauty.

Seems that it's the only thing to do... But what still bothers me... WHY doesn't kmix start??

It might seem like a silly suggestion, but I'd share it anyways.

              I once used this code:
              Code:
              alsamixer
I used it to set my surround speaker volume, am not sure if it would be of any help, but there is nothing to loose.

I'm going to guess that you had a kernel update recently. When you boot, do you have more than one kernel identified? If 'yes,' then boot into the earlier kernel and see if your sound returns. If it does, then it points to a missing kernel (or run-time) module. (not a missing 'kernel')
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Have you tried the famous "sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset"? I've also got "HDA Intel", and this is what worked for me.

I have a VAIO, too...they're great windows laptops, but they don't make the best Linux laptops...and the BIOS does have hardware information; you may have simply not been in the right place.

                    Re: HDA INTEL

My HDA intel soundcard was also broken by the recent kernel update. To fix it I had to do two things.
Firstly edit /etc/modules/ by adding the line
                    Code:
                    snd-intel8x0
to the end of it. And secondly in konsole, typing
                    Code:
                    alsamixer
and turning up all of the listed meters (except mic) to around 90.
That solved it for me and hopefully will do so for you too.
