Kubuntu won't connect to wifi network

I'm on a gateway T-1625 laptop.
I've got a realtek RTL8187B wifi chipset on my wifi card.

I've gotten Kubuntu to pick up the card, but it won't connect.

I installed updates and Knetworkmangler has picked up my net. Its having troubles connecting, saying it can't connect to it.

Is this an open access point or is it encrypted? Do you need to pass a passphrase or key? Have you tried in a place with public access? I would start there ... if still no charm, you may want to post the actual error message, etc. The more info you give the more likely someone can help :-)

It's encrypted yeah.

I use WPA2

There is(Was) no error message.

I just upgraded to 8.10, fogured it would help. But this time I'm not picking any signal from my AP.

Mustek: to see the available APs, you right click on the KNetworkManager in your system tray (normally bottom-righjt of the screen)

Stewie: do you see the wifi interface in 8.10? Have you tried accessing an open AP? (in a cafe , etc)

I do see it in 8.10. If i do the command "Sudo ifup Wlan0" it gives me the ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan= error.

I just took the security off my router, it still didn't pick it up

mmm ... are you using KNetworkManager (you can launch it from the command line if from some reason it is not running). Anyone else has any ideas on what to try? Did you try to see if there is any useful info in /var/log/messages?

What driver are you using?

use lsmod to find the driver.

i use sudo ifconfig wlan0 up.

I entered /var/log/messages and it gave me an Access Denied message.

It might help if I could some how get into an admin account

What driver are you using?

use lsmod to find the driver.

i use sudo ifconfig wlan0 up.

to get my realtek 8187b card up. the driver i am using does not support wpa.

I'm not sure it will support wpa.

I did lsmod, it didn't help at all. just a long list of stuff I have no clue is.


I did the ifconfig wlan0 up, it didn't give me the unknown if error. Thats a good thing I think


However I do know I'm using the windows 2000 driver for this card. I've tried XP, and vista also. But only 2000 really helps.

What driver are you using?

/var/log/messages is a file, and can be viewed in a variety of ways. From a console, you can type

pg /var/log/messages

or

more /var/log/messages

or you can navigate to /var/log using Konqueror (or Dolphin) and right-click on the file (messages) and select to Preview In Embedded Advanced Text Editor.

your using the same driver that i am "net8187b"

when you lsusb look for usbcore there will be a line of drivers there, make sure you either have ndis or r8187 driver not both. you may have to remove one of them.

i had both running at one time.......ooop's

the "r8169" drive is for your eth0 card.

I did lshw -c network and it gave me ndiswrapper+net8187B

That means I've got 2 drivers yes?

no ndisarapper use's net8187b driver.
