    No Sound

    Hello,

I am not getting any sound out. I have a SB Audigy 2ZS sound card and the system sees it.
I have been looking at other threads about this. I get :

Does this mean I need a module and if so which one and how do I get it installed? Can someone please help?

    Thank You!

    Re: No Sound

I think you've TWO problems all tangled up:

    1. You have both an onboard sound chip and an added-on Audigy card. If you mean to use the Audigy card, you have to disable the onboard sound chip in BIOS.

    2. The Audigy card will need one of the alsa drivers for Creative Labs cards -- here's the sound troubleshooting guide:

      Re: No Sound

I disabled the onboard sound chip.

OK. I went thru the guide. I found the driver in the guide chart and read about the soundcore module. I got on a terminal and put in:

      bobby@ubuntu:~$ modinfo soundcore
      filename: /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/kernel/sound/soundcore.ko
      alias: char-major-14-*
      license: GPL
      author: Alan Cox
      description: Core sound module
      srcversion: 548AA54AF08207316C104F8
      depends:
      vermagic: 2.6.24-19-generic SMP mod_unload 586

It shows I have the module and the guide says I do not need to compile it. The guide says the module has to be enabled. How is that accomplished? After it is enabled is the sound supposed to work at that point? Thanks for the help; obviously, I don't know what I'm doing!

      Thanks!

        Re: No Sound

        Code:
        sudo modprobe soundcore
Should enable it. (I'm assuming you did the homework right and came to the correct module).

Also, you need to open the file /etc/modules with kate in super-user mode, Alt-F2 "kdesu kate /etc/modules" with no quote marks, and add "soundcore" with no quote marks at the end of the list of modules that are loaded at boot. Make sure there is a carriage return after that line (i.e. one more blank line below it).

          Thanks,

What I did was a file search for my driver, which is, snd-emu10k1 and it gave me the path to soundcore.ko so I am thinking that is the right module. I hope!
