    Hard disk access errors

    hi

    Everytime I try to do an 'aptitude something' my PC freeze and then I get an IO Error, here is what I found in kernel log that seems relevant :

    Code:
    ata4.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0
    ata4.00: BMDMA stat 0x65
    ata4.00: cmd c8/00:08:be:70:29/00:00:00:00:00/e1 tag 0 dma 4096 in
         res 51/40:00:c1:70:29/00:00:00:00:00/e1 Emask 0x9 (media error)
    ata4.00: status: { DRDY ERR }
    ata4.00: error: { UNC }
    ata4.00: configured for UDMA/100
    ata4.01: configured for UDMA/100
    ata4: EH complete
    APIC error on CPU0: 02(02)
    Is my hard disk really dead or is there something I could do ("standard" fsck do not seem to help a lot)

    thanks in advance

    Re: Hard disk access errors

    I think there is a "nodma" boot option available -- if the only problem is DMA performance, maybe that would help.
