    Keyboard not working - Solved

when i get to the login screen, I can type in my password. After Kubuntu boots up to the desktop, then the keyboard doesn't work. I can't type in any program or text field. the mouse works but no keyboard. I pulled up the virtual keyboard and that didn't type anything either?

I am running Kubuntu 8.04 on an Alienware M51 laptop. Everything was working ok.

I restarted and also tried turning it off and on and it did the same thing, no keyboard. I booted from the liveCD and everything worked there, I could type and such.

Any Clue and/or solutions? Thanks! I'm having to use my wife's Vista Laptop! PLEASE help me get back to Linux!!!

    Re: Keyboard not working

The keyboard function is part of what is run by KDM, and controlled by the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. If you can boot a Live CD and then mount the hard drive, you can look ind the /etc/X11 directory and see if there is a recent backup of the xorg.conf file, and compare that to the one named xorg.conf -- see if anything looks funny.

If you can boot Recovery Mode and have a working console, then (in root mode at the # prompt) you can try
    Code:
    dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
and then reboot and try the normal login.

Also, you could copy the xorg.conf file from the booted system under a Live CD session to the hard drive, after you back up the xorg.conf file there. If it works on the Live CD, it should work in the session when you boot from the hard drive, I would think.

That's all I can think of -- it's tough to do a lot on a system with no keyboard! :P

      Re: Keyboard not working

I had a similar problem with a Dell C521 desktop, until i ended up replacing it. it seems that certain BIOS's have a problem with a USB keyboard. try this: connect a small USB hub (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_hub) and connect your keyboard to it. This might help solve the problem.

I had an identical problem tonight, but after some more updates and a re-boot, all was well.

How did i use Synaptic manager without a password?? Opened the calculator, pressed the buttons, and copy&paste.

Prob Solved! after searching the ubuntu site for answers I saw a guy had a similar problem as me. I didn't know about "Slow Keys" under Accessibility. That was it. Just turn it off. Apparently if you hold down shift to long it will turn it on and remember the setting when you restart!!!
