Re: File permissions on Windows partitions

    Yes, glad it worked.
Actually, whilst on the subject I know we all (should) backup our home and other data files regularly, but if I had backed up this file before a reinstall perhaps I would have been back up and running much quicker. I'm sure there must be other files to which this applies. Are there any other system files that you experts back up on a regular basis?
You shouldn't back up your fstab, simply because it won't be the same if you do do a new install.

As for me I just keep /home on a separate partition and backup may /data partition and my intalled apps with apton:
    http://aptoncd.sourceforge.net/

At install just use the manual partitioning tool and choose all the partitions you want mountined at boot. That way your fstab will be generated correctly

An install usually lasts anything up to a fortnight to three weks.

I expect it will change because the UUID will be different? Although I guess the code that follows would always be the same to create a set of permissions so keeping a note of that will be valid.

I have a separate partition for home too. I've got a USB 500Gb hard drive to which I periodically copy the FAT 32 partition. Home is a different matter of course. As you'll obviously know it doesn't take kindly to being copied in this way, but it does agree to being burned to a DVD via K3b (or at least the data I need will). I also now remember to check the preserve file permissions option in K3B (boy, it's fun reinstating home if i've not done that ).
