    Intel 82852/855GM

Today the install of XP on my old Toshiba A10 went down, so I installed Kubuntu Hardy.

No problem - except all information lost.

The problem is - the video settings. In XP I could set the graphics for external monitor to 1200x1600@85. I have tried modifying xorg.conf - the part for the graphics chip that start with grey x-es - but no luck. If I try the largest possible resolution offered in System Settings, I get the same "resolution" or real size of things on the screen, and a lot of scrolling.

When booting in XP there first was information on both screens, but afterwards just the external.

Any idea how I can fix this so that I get my external monitor in real 1200x1600@85?

Are you sure you want 1200x1600 (a high screen) and not 1600x1200 (a wide screen)?

Ah, of course you are right - it is 1600x1200 ... thank you for pointing to that.

        Update -

By setting the monitor to Autodetect in BIOS, I can have more options for resolution on the external screen.

However - while WinXP happily run 1600x1200@85 -

        Code:
        xrandr -q
        give this:

        Code:
        Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 2048 x 1536
default connected 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right) 0mm x 0mm
          1280x1024 75.0*
          1024x768 85.0
          1600x1200 65.0
          800x600 56.0
          1920x1440 60.0
          640x480 60.0
          2048x1536 75.0
The 1600x1200@65 is rather distorted, and at a CRT 65 hz isn't comfortable.

Why don't the linux driver allow more than 7 modes? I mean, when the chip can do 2048x1536@75 - why not 1600x1200@75 or @85?? The modes are in the xorg.conf file!
