    iPhone in Kubuntu

I did a search and found posts on how to sync the iPhone's calendar, but I have a different mission.

One major problem using the iPhone with Linux is that it cannot run the firmware updates. My plan was to install VirtualBox, install XP, then install iTunes. All went well until I tried to see my iPhone. Although Kubuntu sees the camera on the iPhone, it does not see the device itself. The oddity is that in the VirtualBox setup, it does show Apple, Inc as the manufacturer.

This is where I get a little fuzzy (ok, more than a little). Is it that Kubuntu is not registering the iPhone correctly, or is something in VirtualBox?

This is what dmesg is showing when I plug the iPhone in:
[ 181.923679] usb 4-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5
    [ 182.059255] usb 4-1: configuration #1 chosen from 3 choices
    [ 238.079371] usblp0: removed
[ 267.101608] usb 4-1: usbfs: process 7056 (kio_kamera) did not claim interface 0 before use
    [ 1529.460282] usb 4-1: USB disconnect, address 5
[ 1532.833127] usb 4-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
    [ 1532.967624] usb 4-1: configuration #1 chosen from 3 choices
