Kubuntu using up ram, very very slow, just started a few days.

    Hello,

For some unknown reason, my Kubuntu is very slow in the past few days. I checked KDE system guard and it showed 400mb of the 500mb of ram I have is in use. However, the percentage used by either system or user doesn't add up to 100. Also, the only process that is using alot of memory is xorg.

The HD lights is on whenever there is a freeze up.

    Total newbie with Linux here.

    Any help will do.
    Thanks!

I can answer part of your question.

From bootup, the system will use up most if not all of your RAM. On my system, with 1gig RAM, I currently have only 17 Mb free. However only about 350mb is being used by applications, the remainder is either in cache or in buffer so as to speed up access. You can make ksystem guard show this in a graphical form.

When the PC freezes it is likely to start the HDD thrashing so the light would obviously come on.

Did the slow-down you are experiencing occur after an update?

      Hi,

I think so, I installed KDE toys and Kweather. But I already uninstalled them. I also re-installed Kubuntu but the funny thing is some of the drivers are already setup and Kaffeine is already there, it wasn't before. Still slow with the HDD light, I'm wondering if its a hardware problem as the HDD is kind of old.

      Any input will be helpful

      Thanks!
      Jon

type "free -m" in konsole, you will know where the memory go.

type "top" in konsole, see which process eats most CPU or MEM.

Also make sure your swap file is present and active. I had an unusual slow down problem because the swap file was not being mounted correctly. This is especially true on systems with limited memory.
