only stereo sound in kubuntu, no 5.1

Hello, i have a problem with my surround sound in kubuntu: IT WON'T WORK!
stereo sound works great but if i try is sound-check; my center and rear speakers don't say anything...
I use Alsa, my chip is a c-media CMI9761A, which works on a intel ICH5 card
    My settings in alsamixer are:
    surround: on
surround: shared (i also can choose independ, both seems not to work)
    Chanels: 6

I hope someone can help me, it's an important pc; it's a media centre in our living so 5.1 surround sound is pretty there...
    Thanks,
    Leendert

You may have "Sound Surround" ON, yes, but, how are your Speakers set up?
    Not in 'Surround Sound'....for sure.
Check the 'Speaker Setting'....in Sound (for the Channel 6 'set-up')..........you may find it 'set-up' as "Stereo/2 Channel", then, double-check......to see if the Speaker-cables....are SET...in the right 'jacks'
Best of all, double-check....to see if that C-Media 'chip', being an 'on-board' one(is it?).....is capable of running "Surround-Sound". (Sounds like it CAN NOT.)
(if in further doubt, please, read the 'fine print'.....of your computer/sound Manuals. And, don't proceed UNTIL you understand/comprehend what has to be done.)
One step-at-a-time...as though you are setting up your Sound....for the very first time.
    (It's the 'tried-n-tested' method, above.....of 'fault-finding'.)
