If you have stability problems with kubuntu 8.04 and ATI drivers. Such as frozen desktop or weird behaviour then an older fix seems to work for the newer drivers and solves stability problems.
I was having these issues with HD 4850 installed with envyng-qt 8.6 catalyst drivers. I managed to find a fix that a lot of people find works with the latest drivers and solves these stability issues.

I was a little annoyed with the people at wine as I placed the details of this fix in the Half life 2 and Shadow of Chernobyl work arounds and they rejected my post on the basis that the fix is old but actually the solution is also applicable to the latest drivers from ATI and so is the problem! ugh.
I hope this helps someone wondering why there desktop is unstable with ATI 8.6 or thereabouts.
