    ATi Radeo 4870 & 4850

Anyone have these cards running on their system? How are they fairing?

    Thanks,
    Kev

Go to the Phoronix site. They have articles and updates on those ATI cards. So far, they are still behind on Linux compared to Windows. It's mostly because of the ATI drivers for Linux. I suspect they'll eventually catch up and then they'll be very good cards. If I was shopping for a video card, I'd probably choose one of them.

Man it's hard to decide... I know they are great in Windows, and they are cheap (comparatively) but I just don't have time to be fixing things and hoping it'll work "soon." I love to support the guys who were kind enough to put Tux on their product box.. but I think I'll be going nV again this time...

        Hi,
you might want to look at release notes for the latest ATI driver 8.8:
        https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206..._88_linux.html
They claim support for 4800 series, CrossFireX support and much more.

I have a HD4850 and kubuntu 8.04. I have wine running Half life 2 and shadow of chernobyl perfectly. All it took was a couple of tweaks from the wine wikis to my direct3D settings in Regedit and I was away.

They actually run better with improved visuals over my previous 8800 GT. I am also delighted with the almost silent operation of this card.

There can be a slight bug with the X server in kubuntu 8.04 relating to ATI drivers (and an unstable desktop) but an older fix still seems to work for many people and can be found at:

            http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=992#c26

I would see if your HD 4850 is stable in kubuntu 8.04 and if so then don't patch but if your desktop is freezing and acting oddly then apply the simple fix. I've had no problems since I used the fix. Go and buy that HD 4850 and you will not be dissapointed. I really demand silence and low noise with my pc and I'm amazed at how quiet the HD 4850 is. My previous 8800 GT with a zalman cooler (supposedly quiet) was so noisy in comparison.

            all the best
            robert.
