    Requirements before installing KDE 4.1???

    Hi all,

i took a look at some previews of KDE 4.1 and i must say it looks great ...

BUT, i can't find any places on the web that can give me the requirements to run KDE 4.1. Not even on the official site. I found how to install it really easily and i found many previews but no one seems to know what it takes to run it. What are the recommended requirements? If you know tell me please.

P.S. : Sorry for my english, it's not my primary language

What are the specs of your PC, principally the amount of installed RAM and the type of video card/chip you have?

The RAM might present an issue as well as the video card. But that said, the simplest thing to do is to burn a Hardy Heron 8.04 LiveCD running KDE4.1 and test it out (run it from the CD without installing it). HH 8.04.1 can be downloaded here.

Happy to assist. Let us know how it goes. If you run into problems, ask away. And, welcome to Kubuntu Forums!

Re: Requirements before installing KDE 4.1

I just upgraded to KDE 4.1 yesterday. It seems to be quite slow, thou my Linux computer is old as sth.

P4 1.6 GHz with 1.5 GB RAM and GeForce FX 5200 and it should be using the NVIDIA drivers correctly. So I think it'll soon be time for upgrade. KDE 4.0.x worked a bit faster.

That level of system seems to be too slow (would be nice to know if the problem is the cpu or the gpu or maybe both) or then I've done something terrible wrong.

I've got Hardy running on a notebook with 512 ram, & 6000 series nvidia geforce. Works great with desktop effects!

Re: Requirements before installing KDE 4.1

                  The requirements for KDE 4.1?
                  The same as.....for KDE 3.5?, I reckon.
All KDE 4.1....is just that it is an 'upgraded version', after all.
That 80 Gig Hard-drive is a bit weak.........on space, though.
RAM can be improved upon, too.
                  At least 1 Gig.
Ditch the ATI Graphics-card....for a nVidia one.
Pent III 1 Ghz...can be ditched for a 1.8Ghz.(or better.)

                  My System?

                  CPU............AMD Athlon 64 X2 60000+(3.0Ghz) Dual-core
                  Motheboard......ASUS M2A-VM
Graphics-card.......nVidia 7300 GS PCI-e 250Mb (runs at 512Mbs, under XP Pro...don't what it is doing under Kubuntu, yet.)
Sound-card...........Creative Labs Audigy (For XP Pro/Vista........works fantastically, under Kubuntu..'as-is'!)
                  DVD Player.......Lite-on DVD player
                  DVD PLayer/burner.....Lite-on (again)
Hard-drive(s)............. 250 Gig Western Digital ( XP Pro)
250 Gig Western Digital (Kubuntu).......both are SATA, set up as IDE.
                  RAM......................... 4 Gig (Dual-side 1 gig units.......matched/same brand)
                  Monitor......................LCD 22" Wide-screen AOC (Analogue/Digital)
                  Keyboard/Mouse.........Logitech Cordless/Laser

My perseverence ( to achieve all the 'above', since I am on a Disability Pension.).......priceless.
Knowledge/experience..............10 years with computers. (also priceless, as I am also 'self-taught'.)
                  Experience, with Linux (Kubuntu 8.04/Ubuntu 8.04 LTS,32-bit,64-bit/ OpenSuSe 11.0).................(still a 'newbiee'....with these.)

Re: Requirements before installing KDE 4.1

My kde4.1 systems run great on a ati 9250 pro 128 ram card.

1gig ram will definitely help but is not a prerequisite.

Last I heard Intrepid doen't like nivdea cards yet so you might just want to install kde4.1 next to your hardy 3.5.9/10 installation:
                    http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.1.1

In essence you should be fine.

Hope that helps and welcome to the party

Re: Requirements before installing KDE 4.1

I've got a modest 768Mb Ram, and a Radeon 9800 Pro with 128Mb onboard, i find it ample to run KDE 4.1.

If i turn on Translucency, Firefox is a bit jerky when scrolling the page, but that is the only problem i've noticed.
Well.... it's not a problem, i turned it off.

The best driver performance (and with least problems) i have found to be the ATI Radeon (fglrx) driver, other people's mileage may vary.

Just for the record i tried glxgears, the output is:
                      Code:
                      malcolm@hippy:~$ glxgears
                      7158 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1430.897 FPS
                      6660 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1330.008 FPS
                      9940 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1987.737 FPS
                      10800 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2158.128 FPS
                      10760 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2148.689 FPS
                      10656 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2131.198 FPS
                      10823 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2161.839 FPS
                      10860 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2169.279 FPS
                      10806 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2158.705 FPS
                      10820 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2162.721 FPS
As Fintan said:"In essence you should be fine."
