Problem with Graphics Card (ati radeon) after upgrade to kubuntu 8.04

Vostro 1000, amd 64 bits processor and ATI Radeon 256 MB.

I was using kubutun 7.10 and everything was working pretty fine and then i decided to upgrade to kubuntu 8.4 from adept.
After that, i could not load X server, so i edited my xorg.conf to use vesa and then i installed the ATI driver 8.6 downloaded from their webpage.
But now, the X server is loading "normally" (the screen that should be ksplash is just a black and blue misterious box :P) but when it finishes, the system is pretty slow and my ATI Catalyst Center says that i have no ATI RADEON driver installed...

My xorg.conf is using frglx and loading glx too (not changes if i comment the line load "glx").

Anybody knows how to solve this problem?

    thank you

Not sure if the member who posted about their problem's solution here will help, but it may lead you in the right direction.

I "solved" the problem by reinstalling Ubuntu 8.04 kde 4 from the CD.
        Now, everuthing is working fine

That's one way to do it.
