nvidia driver (6600gt) for kubuntu 8.04

hi,

i am trying to install the nvidia driver for kubuntu.

(the problem started for compiz not having tilte bars for the windows when activated, i assume bad driver).

so now i dont have the nv, and not the nvidia.

1) tried the Envy , which could not work since its 8.04
2)tried installing nvidia driver manualy "sudo sh NVIDIA...173..." which failed for lacking the karnel files to compile the files.
3) looked for google over a month for a solution and non find.

thank you for your help, btw kubuntu is a great OS, and i realy find it more comfutale then XP , (with beryl it was even better, now i try to run the compiz in hope for better results)

I have the GeForce 8500 GT and it has been giving me problems ever since I upgraded to Hardy, and like you, envy would not work properly either. However ,today I reinstall envy ND used "sudo envyng -t " from a terminal in kde 3 and it appeared to do it's thing and the video is better but now I no longer have any type of usb storage access etc and the card reader no longer works. Whereas prior to running envyng and installing the latest Nvida drivers all worked well except it would take a long time to boot up and start the xserver. I tried running fdisk on /dev/sdg1 with mp3player hooked up that I usually have no problems with and fdisk was all screwed up, could not identify partition types etc., I had similar results from a usb drive and a sd memory card - all similar problems. I do have the nVida motherboard as well.

EnvyNG is the version of Envy required for 8.04, as Pajoe has found.

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install envyng-core

sudo envyng -t

should bring up the menu to install the Nvidia driver.

@Pajoe, I doubt that the USB mounting issues have anything to do with the video driver, at least not directly.

With your USB device(s) connected, issue

lsusb

and let's see what is connected.

I was able to run Envy successfully - my Geforce 6500 card was recognised, and the driver installed. However it seems that the display is restricted to 640x480, which means that the desktop is not big enough to accommodate programs. I have uninstalled the Envy driver and tried again using nv driver, to no avail. Is there any way to achieve a higher resolution?

did a perfect work! THANK YOU

now that i have the driver installed, when i load the compiz (which is now autoloaded, like never before) i cant see the title bar of the windows, meaning, i cant resize the windows, i even tryed the the alt+right-click, while the alt+leftclick does move the windows, but i want my title bar with the _ox. how do i bring it back?

p.s. when i change with the compiz manager the window manager to KWin, everything is back to normal.(no compiz effects)

the sound device is not working now, i have a susspition that its the problem of the nvidia driver, any ideas?

the compiz SOLVED!!! the decoraion window plug in was not enables(one hceck box was not check in the compiz settings... errr)

but the sound drive is still offline

errr,
after few restarts, the system could not recognize the screen and the video divice and had to redetect them. go ideas what happened? i reran envy from the alternative shell, and the video driver worked out fine , however the monitor device is now screwed up. i cant change the resolution to more then 600X480

this is horrible.

how do i resotre the monitor? i got gigabyte lcd 1703gd

With the Nvidia driver installed by EnvyNG, you can use the included Nvidia utilities to set up GLX and to adjust the screen resolution.

In Konsole:

sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals

That will enable GLX. But you must restart the X server with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace for the change to take effect.

From your user desktop Alt-F2 "kdesu nvidia-settings" with no quote marks, to open the X configuration utility. When you have set the resolution as you want it, click the "Save to X Configuration File" button, and "merge" and save.

I recommend you leave refresh set to "Auto" -- this will give the driver ability to adapt dynamically to different display demands.

I wonder if someone else makes the monitor and gigabyte slaps it's name on it. I have never heard of a gigabyte monitor. In the system settings there is no gigabyte under the manufacturers section. The easiest thing to do is pick a generic lcd with the resolution you want.

did it , happened, now i can see a grey screen after i login...

deatils:

i get the splash screen of nvidia
i see the login screen of kubuntu
i enter the pass
login....
no i can see 5 or 6 flickers that goes VERY fast on the blue backround of the login screen(which is what visible at that moment)
then i can see the desktop, everyting starts up... (i could even see compiz splash screen go on, which i removed later on for hoping to be the reason, which isnt.)
in 5 second , i see a grey white screen , and i can click the screen and i can see the pointer(cruser) change and react, showing that i lunched catapolt or exe. however the screen remains grey.

any idea how to reverse the situation?
(btw i cant do a thing from the kubunut, im writing from my XP)

Boot your system and log in, then take a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log, especially the last couple of dozen lines. If you see anything interesting, you can post it.

(one more thing, i see the kdm is loading something (some exe) before he shows me the gray screen that covers the desktop completly, is there a way to recognize the software?)

I don't claim great expertise on your hardware, but this section appears to reflect some difficulties with the monitor/display. I know that "EDID" is a part of the display ID and interface to the graphics card, and there's definitely some problem in that area. I don't know if this is a laptop or desktop system -- it would be interesting to know what happens when a different display is connected to that Nvidia card.

The other thing I noticed is your "gray screen" AFTER you log in to KDE. That should not happen, and suggests a problem with KDM (the KDE Display Manager). It might help, and can't hurt, to run (in the Konsole)

sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm

Just answer the questions and finish the script, and it might straighten out at least part of this problem.
