Canon IP4200 not printing anymore after upgrade to 8.04

My printer was printing fine under 7.10, using the driver as supplied by Canon. Suddenly, after I have upgraded to 8.04, the printer does not print. The printer still shows in the Printer System Settings window, but when I send a Test Page, nothing happens. I have reported this problem on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ys/+bug/236623.
Canon did supplied a Linux driver, dated back in 2006, but it seems that the driver depends on library files not used anymore by Ubuntu, or it has been updated with a newer version, which does not work with Canon's driver (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s....2/+bug/207798). It does not look like Canon is very eager to help the Linux community by supplying up-to-date drivers.
My printer is now useless in Linux. I have to reboot into Windows every time I want to print something.

The Open Printing Database page for the Canon Pixma IP4200 seems out of date, (Gutenprint 5.0.1 hadn't been released) but it says the printer works "perfectly". It mentions a driver (written by a student in 2006) for Debian based systems, like Kubuntu. For all I know, though, that may be the Linux driver provided by Canon. Otherwise, I'd suggest trying Gutenprint 5.0.2 which is the current release.

Thanks for refering me to that page. I used the recommended driver from "Takushi Miyoshi's Debian driver" website and followed the instructions there. I haven't tried the Gutenprint driver yet.
      My printer is working now!
I just wish I could use the feature to print directly on printable CDs. My printer has a special tray where you put in a white printable CD. Thw Windows software from Canon allows you to use that feature. So for that part I still need to reboot into Windows.
I also understand that Canon made a decision to stop supporting Linux altogether, which is a shame. My next printer will definitely not be a Canon!
