no sound, and when opening kmix, there is no mixer to choose from

I am installing Kubuntu for a friend, and things have went smoothly, but there is no sound at all, the speaker icon in the tray has a red circle with a white x on it. When I click on it, the mixer comes up, and the box beside "current mixer" is blank. The computer definitely has a sound card. Where should I start?

I had a similar symptom from Kmix when I installed.

When I click the speaker I get a small pop up that has a "Mixer" button, a slider, a little "led" looking light, and a plug looking symbol.

When I click on the little led it toggles the mute function.
