I installed Kubuntu 8.04 yesterday, set my monitor at 1024 x 768. When I rebooted today, the monitor was set at 640 x 480. I could not get the slider to work.

Re: Monitor settings overwritten
In system Settings, Monitor and Display, Administrator Mode, Hardware, make sure the right monitor is selected. HH selected "Plug 'n Play for mine, which won't let you change the resolution. I selected Generic LCD 1280x1024 and now everything is working. Apply the settings, the restart x. Control-Alt Backspace.
