Hard Drive Filling up for some unknown reason? [Solved]

    Hi all,

I have updated from Gutsy 7.10 to Hardy 8.04 recently. All of a sudden my 19Gb hard drive is filling up for some reason.

I have removed a lot of my documents etc. to no avail. :P
Is there some kind of "cleanup" tool to remove temp files, I am thinking that it might be a Temp File problem.

This as a secondary PC I use to watch TV with using TVtime and for my e-mails.

Possible that you have quite a lot of downloaded packages (from Adept). You can open a console and type:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get autoclean
    autoclean
Like clean, autoclean clears out the local repository of retrieved
package files. The difference is that it only removes package files
that can no longer be downloaded, and are largely useless. This
allows a cache to be maintained over a long period without it
    growing out of control.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

      Hi Snowhog,

      Thanks for the help.

I did as indicated and there were quite a few MB of files removed.
Rebooted and got a notification again that I am "Low on DiskSpace - KDE Daemon". (1% now where earlier it was 3%).

      I still don't get it?

Update: When I go to Storage Media / Properties of 19G it shows the following.
11,5 MB out of 17,7GB. Where is the rest ?? It is a 20GB Harddrive.

        See: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3095126.0

Actually there have been quite a number of threads on this same topic in the past week or so. Possible bug?

Is strigi doing it's old tricks again? Hmm.. I turned mine off.

There is plenty on the subject here on this forum.

          Maybe this is of use:

            Thanks to all.

            Yip I had a look and .strigi = 5.18GB.

What is strigi and how do I "get rid" off it?

The posts you referred me to really help except of how to stop it.

              You are welcome

              More on strigi:
I got rid of it by simply purging with dept/synaptic.

I think you can turn it off though from within its properties.
I don't use it so I am not sure.

If you do a lot of file searching it is useful. You just need a lot of space and a fast machine

You have to stop/disable the strigi daemon from running at startup. K Menu > System Settings > Advanced > Service Manager (if memory serves - I'm on KDE 4 at the moment). Find the strigi daemon and stop it and also unmark it for loading at startup.
