did the sound problem fixed already ?

Since the release of 8.04, two kernel updates have been released (2.6.24-17 ~ 18) but my sound still doesn't work. Isn't there a solution to that sound problem ? should i live forever with a mute PC as long as i'm using Kubuntu ?

Definitely not!

The following link is to a very comprehensive thread on troubleshooting sound problems: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449
If you have any difficulties following it or any follow up questions feel free to ask.

Actually my install of 8.04 also initially had no sound but simply running 'alsamixer' in the command line and adjusting all the levels was enough to solve it for me (note that if a channel says mm down the bottom then it is muted).

What is your sound card?

lspci | grep -i audio
Code:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
This is mine and I can tell you that it doesn't work out of the box with Hardy or Gutsy (or PCLOS2008). Supposedly this was supposed to be supported in Hardy.

I have found a little work around for myself and that is to suspend the computer after boot. This enables sound. To mute the speakers when the headphones are plugged in, I have to go into KMix and physically mute the input channel.
Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals ... except the weasel.

it looks like the problem is partially solved. i finally have sound, although the volume is very low and i have to turn the volume of the speakers and the sound mixer to almost 100% in order to hear anything.

i double checked in alsamixer, plus tried to change the main sound channel to PCM (but went back to MASTER).

any suggestions ? thanks

So you have it turned up in both kmix and alsamixer then? If so then unfortunately I'm out but hopefully someone else will have an idea.
