Printer problem after attempt to install network printer.

Using Kubuntu 8.04, latest version.

Epson Stylus Color 900 was working just fine as local printer until I attempted to make the printer a network printer.

Now the printer is not working at all. Printer settings are identical to the settings of the same printer on a second 8.04 installation on a separate hard drive.

Still no go.

Here is the latest error message:
Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the CUPS server is correctly installed and running. Error: /var/run/cups/cups.sock: read failed (14).

Any suggestions on how to correct this problem.

Is cups running?

ps -ef | grep cupsd

I suggest that you post this as a bug in Ubuntu Launchpad. Please attach your /var/log/dpkg.log file, and try to include as much information as you can.

It COULD BE that the file "permissions.rules" got modified.

BOFORE you take this step, check something out:

In System Settings>Printers, select "Add Printer/Class". Click "Next" and see if you can select the checkbox for: "Local printer (parallel, serial, USB), or if this option is grayed out.

If you CAN NOT select this option (it is grayed out) then you can be sure that the problem is solved by following the instructions in the above link.

In Hardy the file is located in /etc/udev/rules.d - and its name is: "40-permissions-rules"
