Monitor Sync out of range after NVIDIA Hardware upgrade

After I install the latest hardware drivers using the Hardware Driver Manager, my Samsun SyncMaster 551v monitor signals "Sync out of range" in a floating box.

I understand that the Hardware update changes my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file from the 800x600 that it was to something higher. I know my monitor can handle 1024x768 as it worked when I was running Mepis 7.0, but upon using the alt. install CD for Kubuntu 8.04, I get no higher setting than 800x600.

My mobo is a Biostar TF7025-M2 with an integrated GeForce7025/NF630a Graphics chipset.

This is a fresh install of 8.05, running on a AMD 64 X2 4000.

I would like to take full advantage of the GeForce video card. I am somewhat comfortable with editing in konsole with kate or vim.

If I check to enable this video card, I cannot even open up a konsole or log in.

Does anyone have any idea how I could get the following:

1. My GeForce 7025 video card to work without the "Sync out of Range" error; and,
2. To set the monitor to a setting of 1024x768.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated as linux gurus are hard to find down here in Honduras.

After sleeping on the problem last night, the only ideas I have, besides buying a new monitor, are to accept the changes of the Hardware Driver Manager, and then BEFORE I reboot, go in and edit the xorg.conf file.

The xorg.conf file now looks like this:

Any ideas as to what I would have to include to get the monitor running at 1024x768 and/or avoiding the "Sync out of Range" problem?

I'm not too keen on having to buy a new monitor or staying at 800x600 with, I guess it is the default vesa driver.

I'll change the xorg.conf file back and await a reply (pleassse).

Well, that did not work. Boot got stuck on /etc/rc.local while running local boot script.

Any help out there? Ideas on how to change the new driver's script?

I had to reinstall 8.04 to get back (not a big deal, but takes time). Would really appreciate any suggestions, general or specific.

I was having this problem too when i started a game i soon found out my refresh rates weren't matching
ie game wanted 60hz (which my monitor supports) driver set refresh to 51hz
this could be the problem you are having too
I fixed mine in system settings and things work good for now

Nothing has worked for me. Changed to HH 8.04 and kde 4.1... always the same problem: stability vs. modernity.

No solution, I'm afraid, just a bit of advice on housekeeping. As soon as your X is working, make a backup copy of your xorg by typing

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.original

Now try reinstall the NVIDIA driver. If it doesn't work, you can always revert back to your old settings by copying your original file back - no need to reinstall.

Secondly, your "Monitor" section does not have a lot in it. For comparison, here is mine:

And finally, why don't you let us have your monitor details... Perhaps there is somebody out there with the same model which is working (shot in the dark...).

I am having similar problems, but not as bad.

I installed the Nvidia driver, yesterday, and it does work and give me a good resolution (1680 by 1050), but the refresh rate is very low - 50 Hz. The only other choice given in the settings dialog is 51 Hz. In Windows, my card / monitor use 60 Hz.

Being a Linux newbie, I am currently leaving it alone, but I don't like it.

Thanks, Quantumstate. The display does look just fine and it does look better than before I installed the Nvidia driver. I will stop worrying about it.
