Sadly, there are lot of Ms Windows only hardware on the market. Producers are not making linux drivers and are also hiding the necessary data to make drivers. There are reverse engineering projects but they are not supporting every model.

      WebCam under Linux:
The most important thing before connecting (or even buying) a web cam under Linux is to make sure that an appropriate driver for the digital camera exists.

      Something to try:

Using your Webcam in Ubuntu Linux
      http://amitksaha.blogspot.com/2007/0...ntu-linux.html

      #1 Is your webcam detected:
I plugged in my webcam. Then I did a dmesg

The last few lines were :

[17180395.424000] Linux video capture interface: v1.00
      [17180395.568000] drivers/usb/media/spca5xx/spca5xx-main.c: USB SPCA5XX camera f ound. Type Flexcam 100 (SPCA561A)
[17180395.576000] usbcore: registered new driver spca5xx
      [17180395.576000] drivers/usb/media/spca5xx/spca5xx-main.c: spca5xx dr

      #2 is your webcam detected:
Good enough to indicate that my webcam has been recognized. Just to double check, I did a lsusb

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 04fc:0561 Sunplus Technology Co., Ltd Flexcam 1

      Good luck !
