    how to install a printer

    Hello,

I guess that's quite a stupid question, but I just installed Kubuntu with KDE4, and coming from Ubuntu, I find it quite confusing ...

I have a HP 710C printer plugged in my parallel port (it worked with ubuntu Gutsy), and I just don't fine any printer wizard in KDE. Nothing in the menus ...

    Any idea ??

Yes, there are a few things missing with kde4 pure

Have a look under kmenu>sytsem you should have hptoolbox or something to that extent installed.
If not get it with adept manager.

also you can install Kcontrol (if it isn't already) and run it with alt+f2> kcontrol.
You will pint a printer wizard there.

I hope this points you in the right direction and welcome to the party

Re: how to install a printer

i'm running kubuntu at work (xubuntu at home) so i'll reply with exact details from work. but yes, there is one overall configuration tool and "printers" is an option in it. i recall also, that you may be able to add a printer via the print dialog.

also, you should have a printer webserver running on your computer -- http://localhost:631 (i found the info here: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_in_a_Nutshell ) I forget if this allows you to install a printer or not, though.

on one of our servers, i installed a printer via the command line while ssh'd in from home, but that required some google searches and a leap of faith. it *was* neat to come in to work to find my document in the printer waiting.

Ah, yes, google... check out this picture: http://www.kubuntu.org/images/feistysysset.png the printers tool is in system settings. These link should also be of interest:

Re: how to install a printer

          Hi,

          Thanks for your replies.
Well, the HPtoolbox doesn't work. It's here, I ran it, it says there is no printer on the LPT port. If I retry, it crashes.

I installed kcontrol, which says I'm running kde 3.5.9 (I supposed that's because the only kcontrol available is for the older version of KDE). I didn't find any fonction related to printers. I did find something interesting though : autologin to my session at start up. I can't do that either because the kdm window in my kmenu>favorites> system configuration (or system settings I don't know how it's called in english, I'm french ) is all greyed out (that is the purpose of my next post, in a few days )... But it didn't work : after a reboot, it still asks for my root pwd.

Cacycleworks : the images you've posted are exactly what I'm looking for. Your links are about Kubuntu 7.10. I supposed it ran KDE 3.5. I'd like the same thing on my KDE4 !! Here is a screenshot of my system settings window, advanced tab : No sign of the "Disk and filesystems", "system services", "login manager" in the "system administration" section. The only things I've got are the "Gestionnaire de connexion" (i.e. "Login manager", which is unusable, all greyed out, as I said) and smth for samba.

Where can I find all this admin stuff that was on kubuntu feisty ?

          Cheers

Re: how to install a printer

              Ok guys ...

I've just read that KDE4 wasn't actually ready, the apps being still ported to QT4, and that, basically, KDE4 would be ready with 4.1.
That would explain a lot of things ... Is that the main reason why I can't find all those things I'm looking for ? Because they doesn't still exist ?

In that case, I guess I've been a little too exited by this 4th version, I should have waited a bit more to come back to kde (it remembers me the good old days, mandrake 7.something I installed a while ago)

              Cheers anyway for your help

Re: how to install a printer

In kcontrol you should have printer in connected devices (or something like that, mine is in german and I don't know what the french version would be).

Click on that and you will see a printer window where you can add a printer.

This is what it should look like:

                  Fredh, thanks for your reply.

Well, a bit is missing on my computer : I do have the "devices" section, but no "printers" subsection. Only "keyboard", "joystick", "mouse" and "Storage devices" ... :

Hmmm. that is odd. Do you have cups installed?

How about kde-print, hpiijs and hplip other hppstuff?

Here are some more: system-config-printer-kde, system-config-printer-common

Re: how to install a printer

                          Hey,

kde-print and hpiijs doesn't exist in my adept manager. Hplip, hplip-data and hplip-gui are installed. The other hpp stuff I have (bootcd-hppa, installation-guide-hppa, palo, phppgadmin) doesn't seem to have anything to do with printers ...

EDIT : system-config-printer-kde and system-config-common are installed as well

Thanks very much for your help !

Okay I just had a look at my kde4 only install.

and my kcontrol looked just like yours did

Open adept manager and search for:cups
                            there you will see:
                            printconfig
                            and search for print
                            you should find:
                            kdeprint

Install both. reopen kcontrol and you should be good to go.
                            At least I am

Installing the printer under KDE4 is the easiest I've ever seen. I just turned on the printer (HP psc 1500 USB) and had a message saying "configuring new printer" and seconds later "your printer is ready to use". I tested it and sure enough correctly identified and installed. BTW hptoolbox is under kmenu/Applications/system
