[SOLVED] Can't enable restricted driver on Nvidia 7600GS

Before anyone suggests using Envy, no thanks, I would rather I learned how to make it work properly using the system itself and I usually don't like to pollute my system with scripts or packages not from official repositories.

Basically, the problem is the restricted drivers manager shows that the Nvidia driver is installed, but is not in use. The KDE 4 display options do not allow me to choose what driver to use (which it did with KDE 3). I could manually edit the xorg.conf file to change the settings, but like I said, the system should allow this to work without that kind of intervention. I'm sure I'm just missing something basic, so if anyone has a suggestion (other than Envy), I'd appreciate it.

Envy is actually included in the Hardy universe repo, so that's no longer an issue, but you don't have to use it if you don't want to. If the nvidia driver is installed, try running the following command:
    Code:
    sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
That should configure your xorg.conf for you

The problem with Envy is not that it is or isn't in the repos (nice to know that it is now), its that it installs drivers that aren't from the repos. Using the non-packaged drivers from the Nvidia website makes future kernel upgrades an absolute pain to complete.

As for the problem I was having, it turns out that the issues was due to the heavy traffic on the default repo servers yesterday; it was preventing the driver package from downloading and installing correctly. I changed servers to a mirror close to my home and everything worked perfectly. Like I said, I'm sure I was missing something basic, and I forgot something as basic as server traffic slowdowns.

It seems tha k-ubuntu Hardy Heron have problem to set some video cards. I have the same problem with my nvidia 8800gts and the only way to install the driver was envyng.

Actually, I may have spoken too soon. I was able to get the driver installed and in use, but hardware acceleration and OpenGL shaders don't work. I did bite the bullet and try using Envy, with exactly the same results. I have now clean installed 4 times (once with Ubuntu, once with Kubuntu and twice with Kubuntu Remix) and in each case, the same problem remains, whether I use the restricted drivers manager or Envy. I'm thinking this is a general bug with 8.04 at this point. I have gone back to 7.10 for the time being, Hardy ain't ready yet, IMO.

            Do you have XGL installed?
