    Nvidia 8600M + 64bits = Freezing

Hi, I am a user of a portable compal XFL92 which brings as a graphic nvidia 8600M GT 512MB.

I installed 64bit version of this (wonderful) distribution GNU / Linux but my problem is that when working with the drivers "nv" or "nvidia" in the system freezes occur momentaneos graphical environment, freezes that occur or not using driver Generic "vesa" or when working in the 32-bit version of this distribution (wonderful).

The driver version being used is the 169.12 present in these repositories and being installed through the tool adept.

Anyone know any solution to this problem or if it is a mistake of the said package?

A greeting and thanks for your time

P.D. Sorry for grammatical mistakes, but I am not too well desenvuelvo in English and the text is written in Spanish and translated with the translator of google

I have seen only the browser Firefox freeze, on my system, for a moment. I think that is a Firefox problem, not Kubuntu or Nvidia driver or 64-bit architecture.

Can you do some experiments, and see how much of the system is freezing?

If you will open a Konsole window, and enter
    Code:
    top
then watch that window for a period of time, possibly you will see what is using all the resources at the moment of the freeze. I predict it is "xorg.conf" -- if so, then it is related to operating the graphics. But it could be something else, like "strigi" that can be turned off.

    Hope this helps.

As 1, thank you for answering.

Firefox if installed, but not when it is running, when freezes occur ... These can occur by opening the KDE menu, or simply doing nothing by moving the mouse over the desktop.

These freezes occur only when using the driver "nvidia" or open "nv" if the system works with the driver "vesa" freezes these do not occur and that is why I think that may be the driver nvidia + my model of graphic (GF8600m GT) causing them.

It is curious because the desktop (AMD + nforce6100 ), working in 64-bit I do not have any kind of problem, it's with the computer graphics with a "modern" (8XXX series that nvidia has not been as "consistent" as previous DX10 ... .... sucks) with which I have a problem

My processor (its 2 cores) is always being used 100% by the application of BOINC distributed computing, but the system already suffered freezes before installing and running such alicación so I do not think that is why they occur.

Anyway (I am now 32 bit) when booting the 64-bit version "continue investigating"

      Thanks again for your response

I have a Dell Vostro 1500 with the 8600M GT graphics card in it. The driver from the repo's was nothing but problems for me. I ended up fixing things by using envy to install the driver. This worked on the KDE 3.5 version but i had issues with the KDE 4 version even after using envy. Are you using the KDE 4 remix?

I installed the drivers for graphics through envy freezes and seems to have disappeared.
