Wifi support on Acer Aspire 5570Z notebook not possible yet - help request

Have installed previously Kubuntu 6.06 and 7.10 without success on installing, configuring and therefore using wifi on this Acer Aspire Notebook (NoBo).

With release of 8.04 (Hardy Heron) with more recent kernel version, I believed that native support for this hardware item would be better.
It was indeed, since the Atheros wifi was recognized correctly.
Nevertheless, even after searching the net for solutions and installing madwifi module suggested by Atheros, I'm still not able to configure my wifi, therefore being forced to keep Win XP on dual-boot to be able to use wifi, when a physical internet connection is not available.

After installing also suggested at Atheros site the acer_acpi module specific for this NoBo, I'm still not able to even configure wifi, as you will see by the below transcription of "iwconfig".

Other than that Hardy Heron version is working flawlessly from install, having recognized and configured virtually all if not really all hardware items, including sound which was a tricky one on previously Kubuntu installations.

Following is transcription of "lsmod", "lspci", "uname -a", and "iwconfig":

Re: Wifi support on Acer Aspire 5570Z notebook not possible yet - help request

Have you tried loading acer_acpi, enablind wifi and then reloading madwifi?
    Code:
    sudo su
    modprobe acer_acpi
    echo "1">/proc/acpi/acer/wireless
    modprobe -r ath_pci
    modprobe ath_pci

Now that I'm back home and with access to wired broadband, I've updated my testing installation of Kubuntu Hardy Heron - 8.04 and applied your suggestion commands.

      Following is transcription of it:

      Thanks

Complementing, after trying to configure wifi:

      root@jgm-5570z:/home/jgm# iwconfig
      lo no wireless extensions.

      eth0 no wireless extensions.

Using KWifiManager or Wireless Assistant, the msg that appears is that :

The scan is complete, but no networks have been found.

      or for Wireless Assistant:

      No usable wireless devices found.
      Wireless Assistant will now quit.

      Therefore I'm back to zero!!

Re: Wifi support on Acer Aspire 5570Z notebook not possible yet - help request

Hello, I am having the same problem as meinhardt_jgbr. My chipset is the AR5007EG and I am using an Acer Aspire model 5100-3357 notebook.
-This chipset works with the windows driver NET5211.INF under Windows XP
        - I am running Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron (the 64 bit version)

I would really like to be a full time user of Kubuntu but on my laptop I really need wireless support. I am a total noob when it comes to running linux so any help you give is appreciated and please type code so a noob can copy and paste it.
        Thanks in advance.

Re: Wifi support on Acer Aspire 5570Z notebook not possible yet - help request

I was able to solve this problem after searching on the Internet for the proper madwifi.org module for wireless AR5007E used on the Acer Aspire 5570Z NoBo.
Linux modules are the equivalent to the M$ drivers.

After download of the correct madwifi module, I followed exactly the installation instructions and "voila" my wifi became fully operative under kernel 8.04 Hardy Heron.

            Message for Paraguy

The Atheros setup and 64 bit require a different set using ndiswrapper and the XP drivers. I kinda had it working under 7.10, but have not tried it under 8.04 and 64 bit yet. There is a rather large archive post about this on the Ubuntu side - search for Atheros 5007EG as I recall

Also - seems KDE network management applications seem to have problems with Atheros setup. An other application called 'wicd' was highly recommended. Worth checking out.

            - - - I can't get my winmodem to initialize yet, so I'm kinda stuck at the moment. No modem - no internet.

Re: Wifi support on Acer Aspire 5570Z notebook not possible yet - help request

In the case of my Acer Aspire 5570z NoBo, I did not need to use ndiswrapper.
Wifi came to life just by applying the madwifi correct module and configuring it by strictly following the install instructions.
Actually, during the install process, it re-compiles the kernel with the madwifi module.

Good to hear, and it also tells me your running 32 bit version.
