Found a temporary workaround for my HP printer/scanner

    Hi all,

As some of you might know, at this point there are still some problems with scanners and all-in-one devices, like my printer: HP PSC 750, which is a scanner/printer in one.

I use them both intensively and also use the HP utility called HP-Toolbox. Needless to say, that utility doesn't work completely well either. Fiddling around a bit to figure out how to get both my scanner to work and my HP-Toolbox to work completely (at this point it only sees the configured printer, but gives all kinds of errors on it), I managed to find out that if I start either kooka or hplip-toolbox as root, they work!

This confirms the suspicion I had that it was a permission issue that was at hand. For some reason the regular user lacks the permissions to see scanners and all-in-one devices properly. I can print, but I cannot use any of my printer's other features. However, now if I start them from the console as root, they work.

Now if only I knew where we can file bugs on Kubuntu, I would file a bug report on this one.

Hope this one helps someone out there.

    Marc

Although my HPScanJet (separate scanner) and HPDeskjet 840C works fine, I hit a snatch today while trying to print in duplex mode. It was greyed out. Sure enough, running the HP-lip toolbox gives an error when opens. I tried running using kdesu and sure, no error. I won't try running the printer as root but it confirms that there's some problem with error permissions. I'll have to dig around to see how to change the permissions later on as I can't do without duplex printing.
