    Notebook external display

I am using an IBM R40 notebook connect to an external monitor with higher resolution, after I logon the external display blanks leaving me only the notebook display, I don't use dual display just want to switch between internal and external display but I couldn't do that. I tried to modify the X config but I either crash X or only internal display works, I think this is a common problem to notebook anyone have experience with that ?

    Re: Notebook external display

After messing with the setting for days finally I got both display working, but hard locked at 800x600, no matter how I change the monitor type, tested ok, reboot again the display always turns up 800x600, and virtual desktop not working so I couldn't see the full screen and where to click, MAD !!! I think this make Linux not dominate desktop yet > > >

I still not fixed that but got a work around, I change the driver to VESA instead of ATI, and the external LCD display to a monitor, this worked and the test passed, but the external display still locks at 1024x768 can't get any higher although the xorg.conf still reads 1280x1024 !! but after reboot the monitor changed back to LCD automatically, X running completely on it's own never listen to me > > >

Btw the LCD driver is very outdated, both my Philips 105B2 and 170B are missing from the list although they are over 3yrs. old !!
