Look at the printers user manual. Lexmark printers usually can emulate/accept HP drivers, and the manual will tell you which HP models. Pick/install one of the listed HP drivers instead.

I have an X1180, and thought the same - paperweight. But I got it running on Linux using the Lexmark drivers to another printer (a Zsomenumber). It's very common that at least basic functionality can be obtained if one uses an older driver.

Also, the 'x' presumably means you have the all-in-one. Any luck with the scanner?
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.
