synaptic seems to be locked up during install of new apps.

I was following instructions on the following site on how to get my desktop set up properly
    http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfec...tu-8.04-lts-p4
I was on page page 3
    http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfec...tu-8.04-lts-p3
I marked all the apps listed on the page and synaptic got stuck during the install of the apps. I am using the version of Kubuntu that has KDE 4. The last 3 lines of synaptic say:

    Setting up sun-java6-source (6-06-0ubuntu1) ...
    Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place

it has been this way for 2 hours now and is still running, I have not stopped it from running or closed the application. Any help on what to do next would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Re: synaptic seems to be locked up during install of new apps.

    Open a console and type:
    Code:
    sudo killall synaptic
The problem (in KDE 4.1) with Synaptic (IMHO) is that it doesn't actually close when it is finished. I was having this problem and decided to uninstall Synaptic (did so today).

The console command will kill/stop Synaptic. Then, to ensure that everything is in fact properly installed, type:

    Code:
    sudo dpkg --configure -a
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install
    sudo apt-get autoclean
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

      Hey man,
Thanks for the help, your instructions worked great. I think now I also am going to uninstall synaptic.

Glad to have been of assistance.

If you have not already uninstalled Synaptic, you can try (something I didn't) checking the box to have Synaptic close after installation and see if if then closes after a package is installed.

I've already tried checking the box...did not work! Synaptic freezes earlier on my system.

Thanks for the input my question is answered and I am removing the offending program.

I did not start the thread. Should this be left to in10city?

Sorry! Yes, the originator of the thread should decide if/when to mark it solved.
