    /etc and all subdirectories permissions

    Hi,

By mistake I altered the permissions of all files and subdirectories in /etc

Could some please post the result of the " ls -al " command executed in /etc so that I could have a reference to change everything back to normal ?

And in the permission string 0440 what does the first 0 stand for (the other numbers being there for owner, group and all others) ?

    Thank you,

    Re: sudoers permissions

Can you start with the recovery mode ?

or use live CD, mount / partition and change the permissions.
or use the alternate CD "Rescue a broken system" option.
    Before you edit, BACKUP !

Why there are dead links ?

Re: /etc and all subdirectories permissions

Thanks, I have just completed the repairs in recovery mode and changed recursively all the permissions in /etc to 0755, while setting those for 'sudoers' to 0440.

I had no idea that in the recovery mode one is logged in as root.

But how can I find out the normal permissions of /etc and all its files and subdirectories ? 0755 might be a little too much.

Could you please give me a reference ?

      Thanks again
